Inpatient Care
The Heartbeat Of Dunstan Hospital
Vincent Ward
The Vincent Ward comprises 24 acute care beds, including a two bed High Dependency Unit. Our Trained Rural Hospital Doctors can deliver a broad range of services including general medicine, post surgical rehabilitation, paediatric care, and palliative care and utilise remote support from specialists in Dunedin if required. Currently, 93% of medical bed demand in the region is already met by Dunstan and Lakes District Hospitals. Unless a condition requires an operation, intensive care, or specialist procedure (eg cardiac angiogram/catheterisation) the team are highly likely to be able to manage your health care entirely at Dunstan Hospital.
The Vincent Ward plays a vital role in delivering healthcare to Over 30,000 residents across Central Otago and the Wānaka regions. The ward is staffed by a dedicated team of professionals, including registered nurses, health care assistants, and allied health staff, all committed to providing patient-centred care.
The name "Vincent Ward" pays homage to Vincent Pyke, a notable 19th-century figure in Central Otago's history. Pyke was a draper, miner, politician, writer, and explorer who significantly contributed to the development of the region . His legacy is also reflected in other local landmarks, such as Pyke Street and the Vincent Community Board. Today, Vincent Ward continues to embody the pioneering spirit of its namesake by adapting to the evolving healthcare needs of the community. Recent updates, including the introduction of a CT scanner and the implementation of modern visitor policies, demonstrate the ward's commitment to maintaining high standards of care and accessibility for patients and their families.
Our Clinical Director
As Clinical Director at Dunstan Hospital, Dr Jonathon Wills has seen first-hand how vital local healthcare is for the people of Central Otago and the Upper Clutha. For more than a century, Dunstan has stood as a community-owned hospital, providing exceptional, personal care to generations of families. Today, as the region grows faster than ever before, Dr Wills is leading efforts to ensure the hospital continues to meet that demand, offering the highest level of care right here at home. In this video interview, Dr Wills sheds light on why having hospital-level care close to home is critical — especially when time is of the essence.
