In Memoriam: Sir Sam Neill KNZM
- Patron, Dunstan Hospital Foundation
It is with profound sadness that the Dunstan Hospital Foundation marks the passing of our Patron, Sir Sam Neill, on 13 July 2026, aged 78. His family announced that he passed away in Sydney, surrounded by loved ones, describing his loss as sudden and unexpected.
Sir Sam was one of New Zealand's most admired and recognisable figures. Acclaimed internationally for his remarkable career spanning more than five decades in film and television, he remained throughout his life a proud New Zealander with an enduring connection to the people and landscapes of Central Otago.
As Patron of the Dunstan Hospital Foundation, Sir Sam brought credibility, warmth, and heartfelt support to our mission. He understood the importance of accessible, high-quality healthcare in rural communities and generously lent his voice to helping secure a stronger future for health services across Central Otago and the Upper Clutha.
What made Sir Sam so special was not only his extraordinary professional success, but his authenticity, humility, and genuine care for others. Despite global acclaim, he remained approachable, thoughtful, and deeply committed to the communities he loved. Those who had the privilege of meeting him will remember his wisdom, humour, kindness, and unwavering generosity of spirit.
Sir Sam's support of the Foundation helped inspire confidence in our vision and encouraged others to invest in the future of healthcare in our region. His belief in the importance of community, wellbeing, and giving back will continue to guide our work for years to come.
On behalf of our trustees, supporters, volunteers, staff, and the wider community, we extend our deepest condolences to Sir Sam's family and friends. We are immensely grateful for the time, encouragement, and friendship he shared with our Foundation.
His legacy will live on not only through his extraordinary body of work, but also through the many communities, causes, and people whose lives he touched.
Moe mai rā, Sir Sam.
Thank you for your generosity, your advocacy, and your belief in our community. We are honoured to have called you our Patron, and we will carry your legacy forward with pride and gratitude. ❤️
