Our Local Hero: National Recognition for Dr Matthew Born
The James Reid Award is awarded to a rural medical practitioner or trainee who has demonstrated excellence or innovation related to education or research in rural health.
Dr James Reid, for whom this award is named, had a central role in the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine since its inception and chaired the Division’s Board of Studies for several years.
This year’s recipient, Dr Matthew Born, is receiving this award for his role as a teaching Fellow for the clinician performed ultrasound course. His passion for teaching is well established within New Zealand’s rural community having guided cohorts of rural clinicians to upskill and enhance their practice with ultrasound. He also travels to Africa and Nepal to support and teach medical colleagues in ultrasound and continues to be part of a wider Point-of-care ultrasound, or POCUS, community.
