Celebrating our People: Meet Trevor Lloyd

Senior Clinician. Rural Doctor. Storyteller.

This year marks a remarkable milestone for Trevor Lloyd, one of Dunstan Hospital’s senior clinicians. Trevor has just renewed his medical registration for the 50th time, with 26 of those years spent caring for patients at Dunstan Hospital.

For more than two decades, Trevor has been a familiar, trusted presence in our community. As a rural hospital doctor, his work has spanned generations of Central Otago families—often caring for the same whānau through multiple stages of life. But beyond his clinical leadership, Trevor has long believed that medicine is as much about stories as it is about science.

Where Medicine and Storytelling Meet

Alongside his medical career, Trevor has nurtured a passion for creative writing, seeing language and storytelling as deeply complementary to clinical medicine.

“Listening carefully, understanding context, and helping people make sense of their experiences are at the heart of good medicine and good storytelling,” Trevor says.

With the support of Central Otago Health Services Limited (COHSL) and Dunstan Hospital, Trevor has been able to further develop this creative side of his practice. COHSL supported his academic journey by reimbursing university fees for a Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing and later a Master of Arts in English, an investment that reflects Dunstan’s commitment to lifelong learning, professional growth, and retaining experienced clinicians in rural health.

Giving Back Through Stories

As a way of giving back, Trevor will share a new short story each month, written especially for the community and published on the Dunstan Hospital website.

These stories offer thoughtful, often quietly powerful reflections, drawn from a lifetime of observation, human connection, and lived experience in rural New Zealand. They remind us that healthcare is not just about treatment, but about people, place, and connection.

Why This Matters

Trevor’s journey is a powerful example of what makes Dunstan special:

  • Long‑term commitment to rural healthcare

  • Support for professional development beyond the clinical

  • Valuing the whole person, not just the role

  • Keeping talent close to home by investing in our people

By supporting clinicians like Trevor to grow, explore, and give back in meaningful ways, Dunstan helps ensure experience, wisdom, and care remain embedded in our community.
